Hey, so the other day I was meandering along taking a walk when a bicyclist went storming by me on my left, with nary a warning out of the speedy pedaling man. It scared the living crap out of me! And I thought, that would have been nice to have had some kind of verbal ‘heads-up’ from the speedy biker.

One thing I’ve noticed here in Northern CA is a huge lack of verbal warnings from runners and bikers, compared to Southern CA… and I don’t know why that is. But suffice it to say, SoCal has spoiled me and my calm emotional state. That’s for sure.

A nice “on your left!” is always appreciated!

As it is, being a runner is a hazard in and of itself to begin with. While dodging cars coming out of driveways and side streets where the drivers only look left, so I’m always willing to give a little shout out to people I come up behind.

Yes, I said drivers only look left. That’s because I run on the left side of the road.

There’s a school of thought with some runners that suggest one should run up the left side of the street, against traffic, versus running with traffic. The theorem of this practice suggests that you will never see that swerving, drunk driver or severely distracted driver coming up behind you when you’re running with traffic. (Unless everyone in front of you has a look of horror on their faces, while looking past you. Then I’d suggest throwing yourself out of harm’s way and into the shrubbery.)

But if you’re running into traffic, you at least have a decent warning of ill-begotten driving skills because you’ll see them coming, and have decent warning.

Do Runners put their Garmin on Pause

Ah, so there you are, out running, and when you come to a stop light, take a pee break, or any other kind of break… or your route is interrupted, you go and hit your pause button on your timer on your Garmin or preferred GPS wrist device.  (I’ll use the term Garmin to reference any and all GPS-like wrist devices.)

But is that most accurate or the best practice for your training?

I find many people I chat with tend to hit pause on their Garmins during their runs.  That drives me crazy.  Not because they do it, but because I reflect upon the idea of myself doing that, and not finding a good reason to do that!

The way I (and a few other runners) think about it, since many of use are running to train for events, hitting pause is something that can’t be done.  In an organized event like a 5k, half-marathon or full, no one pauses that pesky run clock at the event.  So to keep it real, we don’t turn things off either.

Having An Odd Rought Spot With My Legs These Days

March 25, 2013

These days, I’ve been running on and off, but over the last few months, I started getting serious again.  But egads, over the last week or two, the back of my legs and my knees are getting more stiff with each run.  WTH??? I’m stretching and, well, mostly warming up before each run.  Now, I [...]

Finding The Right Shoe For You

December 28, 2012

Buying shoes for running or walking seems simple.  But it’s actually an important process that should not be left to amateur hour.  And what I mean by that, is that you should really consult with someone verse in the industry of running and not your buddies, who just happen to like a shoe brand. There [...]

Run Training Report – First 10-Miler in a Year on Dec 1, 2012

December 5, 2012

Last Saturday was a repeat milestone for my running. After multiple weekends of hitting up 5 to 8 miles, I was finally pushed into a 10-miler.  And it wasn’t too horrible, though I might say, that those last few miles were of the kind that felt pretty discouraging.  But it was accomplished. I tend to [...]

How I Dramatically Improved My Running Pace Overnight

November 2, 2012

Yes, the title is true.  One day I was slogging along at 12 to 13-minute paces.  Then suddenly, I’m cranking out 9 to 10-minute paces!  It’s pretty exciting, and best of all, it’s actually easier to run faster! Tonight I cranked out a 9:42 pace, versus a month ago, at the same distance, I struggled [...]

Getting Started Running: Keeping It Up

October 31, 2012

Once I started running, the next task was sticking to it.  And sticking to it can be easy and sometimes, hard.  There are days I’d rather sit and nap and other days I can’t get out soon enough.  But for me, my motivator is what running does for me in the long run. (That, and [...]

Getting Started Running: Building Up The Speed

October 24, 2012

When I first started running a few years back, I never imagined the bug would bite me as it has.  But it has.  But back in the early days, I had a tough time keeping running going.  But that was probably more from how I “ran” fairly hard and wore myself out early.  So my [...]

Getting Started Running: Building Up The Distance

October 22, 2012

So once the bug bit me and I felt like I wanted to keep at this running fad thing, I wanted to go longer distances than just around my block.  My ego would not allow me to head out the door looking all cool, and showing back up in 7 to 10 minutes.  Couldn’t do [...]
